Hundreds of Locals Turn Out for the Larkspur Library’s Grand Opening
If you missed the opening of the new Larkspur Library on March 28, you might not believe what an incredible celebration of community took place at 10 Rose Lane.
It’s worth taking a minute to check out our video of the highlights, sound on, to get a glimpse of how much can be achieved by visionaries and volunteers who relentlessly pursue such an ambitious goal for a small town.
Because as Mayor Andre said on opening day, “This library is a gift to the future…”
Patrons rushed the opening of the library doors like it was a Dead show. Kids chanted and high-fived Larky. Neighbors chatted over free donuts and lunch.
And the Book Brigade was a BLAST! Thanks to Diana St. James and her crew at Friends of the Larkspur Library for organizing nearly a thousand people to come out early on a busy spring Saturday to be part of the celebration.
It has taken years of hard work by the Commons Foundation, the city, the library, the Friends of the Larkspur Library, the Larkspur Library Foundation and Refugia Marin to bring this new community center to life.
And to the local donors who contributed fully one-third of the nearly $20 million project, we say THANK YOU!!!
We had a table at the grand opening and were excited to meet so many locals! LCF is proud to have donated to the grand opening festivities, as well as both the old and new library – and we look forward to supporting the new library and its programs in the future.
It is also worth mentioning that when the library project was first seriously discussed more than a decade ago, many people believed the Internet would eliminate the need for libraries. At the time, many schools had a BYOD – bring-your-own-device – policy because it was thought that most of children’ s learning would happen online.
Today, experts are well aware of the challenges that technology presents for young people – and Covid taught us how important it is for communities to have in-person places to gather.
And the new Larkspur Library is a FABULOUS place to gather!
In addition to the stunning main library room, there is a lovely children’s reading room, a teen room, study rooms, meeting rooms, sliders that open to patios, bike parking, EV chargers and tons of outdoor seating in the garden.
Stop by the branch from 10am-5pm from Tuesday thru Saturday. Parking is available on Rose Lane or in the former Lucky shopping center.
