Historic Flooding Hits Larkspur

On the weekend of Jan. 3, King Tides and a winter storm pushed flood bay and creek waters into Marin’s low lying areas, flooding Twin Cities’ neighborhoods, businesses and Highway 101 and making national headlines. Newly sworn-in Larkspur Mayor Stephanie Andre toured flood damaged areas with Rep. Jared Huffman and described Larkspur Marina streets that “looked like the lagoon.”

- Bay Area news outlets reported extensively on the flooding and its aftermath, including traffic that gridlocked the Twin Cities following the closure of 101.
- The city declared the floods a state of emergency and reported that preliminary estimates show King Tides hit 8.7 feet on Sat. Jan. 3, 1.5 feet higher than National Weather Service estimates and not too far from the 100-year-flood level of 9.5 feet.
- Matthew Hartzell’s dramatic photos served to document key flood and traffic areas during the emergency, as evidenced by his shot of the Larkspur Boardwalk underwater, above, and traffic near Joe Wag, below.
- Marin County announced yesterday that it will seek $3.5 million in federal assistance for flood-damaged areas.
