The Larkspur Community Foundation and The City of Larkspur co-sponsored the 1st Larkspur Volunteers Appreciation Event on February 25, 2016 at the American Legion Hall.
The idea for this event began when several organizations told the Larkspur Community Foundation of their need for more volunteers to help in a number of different ways. Mayor Catherine Way was also interested in thanking City volunteers, and asked us to help. The Foundation initiated this event to encourage our sense of community by appreciating and encouraging local volunteers. About one hundred people attended, representing some twenty-three different nonprofit agencies and groups, and local government boards and commissions.
Many people said how really pleased they were to be acknowledged by the City as volunteers in our community. There was lively conversation among attendees learning more about various volunteer opportunities. We introduced Kobe Pole from Marin County Search and Rescue as a great example of a teenager engaged in volunteering. We also celebrated volunteers who have been serving our community for years, such as Steven Connor, volunteer coordinator for our community garden.
The Foundation was able to give each volunteer a copy of the book, “Larkspur Past and Present” plus gift certificates donated by Equator Coffee and Urban Remedy, new shops in the Lark Creek complex.
We were delighted with the enthusiastic response and recommend this become an annual Larkspur event that the City and the Foundation produce – possibly called “The Heart of Larkspur”, held in February near Valentine’s Day.
